It’s hard to imagine life with modern technology, such as televisions, mobile phones and the internet, but there was a time when these things were only imaginable. Today, it’s quite a different story, with 1.67 billion worldwide households owning a tv in 2018.
So, how did the modern television come about? Read on for a brief overview of its history.
What did people do before television?
Watching television is now like second nature for many households, and with so many streaming sites now available the quality and accessibility of television is better than ever. So, what did people do before television? The radio and newspapers were used as the main sources of information and for entertainment, books, music, toys and other hobbies kept most people occupied.
How was the television born?
Steps towards inventing the first television set started in the mid 19th century when electronic inventions began to emerge. In 1862 Giovanna Caselli invented the Pantelegraph which transferred images through wires and over 10 years later the transfer of images via signals was discovered by two scientists called Smith and May.
It wasn’t until 1924 when the moving picture was developed by John Baird, paving the way for TV shows and films. Later, in 1950, the first colour TV was released after years of development.
How have televisions changed?
There is little resemblance between the first television set and televisions of today.
Size – One of the biggest changes is the size of televisions. The first sets were extremely bulgy compared to today, with small screens and clunky buttons. Over time, TV’s have become slimmer with flat-screen designs.
Cost – The first television was not priced the same as today and the expensive price tag meant only the rich were able to access TV’s. However, the price has come right down and you can pick up a small TV for around £100.
Quality – Picture quality is not what it used to be, with fuzzy pictures being replaced with high definition images and amazing sound quality.
